In adolescents, inadequate sleep can have long-term effects on academic performance and mental health.
The American Medical Association, the US Department of Health and Human Services, and the American Academy of Pediatrics consider chronic sleep loss in adolescents to be a public health problem. It is a risk factor for substance abuse and mental health problems, as well as more problems such as sports injuries.
Between academic, social, and extracurricular obligations, school-age children often have busy schedules that can make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. Wherever possible, try to follow a consistent schedule and a wind-down period before bed. To strengthen the association between the bedroom and sleep, have them do homework or other activities in another room when possible.

Teachers are the heart of every school. Ask any adult about their favorite teacher, and they'll likely share a story that’s shaped their life. During Teacher Appreciation Week, we celebrate the incredible work teachers do both inside and outside the classroom. Beyond lesson planning, teaching, and grading, they serve as mentors, coaches, role models, and often become some of their students' biggest supporters. The impact they make can resonate for years to come. This week, take a moment to thank an Elsberry teacher for the positive difference they've made in your life, your child's, or your family's. #ESDThanksTeachers

The fifth grade wax museum was outstanding! The kids did an amazing job portraying the famous person they researched this semester. Students recited a small biography from memory while they were in character at the wax museum. Great job fifth graders! A full album of photos is available on the EMS Facebook page.
